The game was produced in commemoration of the Sonic series 15th anniversary and was the first Sonic racing game since the 1997 Travellers Tales game Sonic R. It was released in Europe the following month and for Microsoft Windows at the end of the year. It was developed by Sonic Team and Now Production, published by Sega, and released worldwide in February 2006 in Japan and North America. In the games 16 tracks, the player competes against characterseither controlled by computers or other playersin story and battle modes. Power characters can break certain objects, giving the player a boost and additional air. Turbulence can also be used as a moving half-pipe so riders can perform aerial tricks while racing past fellow competitors. Riders will also ride Turbulence waves generated from other riders to boost their own speed. The innovatively designed tracks are filled with collectables, jump ramps for high flying acrobatic tricks, and long rails for grinding action.
